TOWARD I HOME I AWAY
How are large cities shaped by the changing influx of people? How can connections, overlaps and encounters between generations be captured in the city? The urban designers of the Turkey-based Hubban network use scientific, cultural and artistic means to create moments of inclusion for newly formed communities in urban life:
‘Hubban emphasises the importance of recognising these communities as integral parts of the city and aims (...) to build bridges between different cultures that have migrated to the same urban environment. In this way, it aims to contribute to mutual development, social cohesion and the creation of cultural encounters on a systemic level.’
Sounds like a match! That's why we're starting a joint project! We will spend a week researching and working in the Ayvansaray district of Istanbul.
During this time, an interdisciplinary group of artists from the Hubban and bridgeworks network will develop a performance concept. Meanwhile, the site in the district will be redesigned by the two organisations urban.koop and ankaraaks with small, site-specific interventions. The joint work will culminate in a public performance with music, dance and video art. We are also planning workshops for the local community to actively involve them and get creative together.

background
With the theme ‘towards home away’, we are focussing on a central topic, especially for artists who have migrated to Turkey. The Ayvansaray neighbourhood neighbourhood is a place of particular importance for migrant communities. The performance and workshops will take place in places of daily solidarity within the community.
‘TOWARD | HOME | AWAY’ is part of a three-month, process-orientated research project that deepens the collaboration between bridgeworks and Hubban and explores new ways of cultural and social cooperation.
VAHA is an initiative of Anadolu Kültür and zusa, funded by Stiftung Mercator and the European Cultural Foundation. We thank Chrest Foundation for its support.
